Alba Iulia is a city with a monumental historical significance. It is where the Great Union took place in 1918 and also the coronation of the kings Ferdinand I and Mary, the first monarchs of Greater Romania.
The Alba Carolina Citadel is the largest citadel in Romania and has a heptagonal shape, with a bastion being located in each corner, and the outside walls having a length of approximately 12 km. The Citadel also has a gate on each wall, but the main gate is on the Eastern side.
You can spend a full day visiting the museums, have a nice meal at the medieval restaurant, enjoy a coffee and rent an electric bike to take a round trip in the citadel. The citadel is free, but the museums have an entry fee.
Be sure not to miss The Guard Change Ceremony that takes place daily during the touristic season (May – September) at 12:00, and sometimes twice a day during weekends.
